Sewer Clean-outs

When it comes to sewer scope inspections or plumbing emergencies, one simple component can make all the difference: the sewer clean-out. If you're a homeowner—or buying a home—understanding what a clean-out is and where to find it can save you time, money, and hassle.

What is a sewer clean-out?

A sewer clean-out is a capped pipe that provides direct access to your home's main sewer line. This access point allows plumbers (and sewer inspection professionals like us) to clear clogs, perform maintenance, or inspect the sewer line using a specialized camera.

It’s usually a white or black PVC or cast-iron pipe with a threaded cap, typically labeled "cleanout" or with a square nut on top.

Without a clean-out or with one that’s buried or inaccessible, performing a sewer inspection becomes difficult or impossible, often requiring extra labor or rescheduling.

Where can you find the clean-out?

The location of your cleanout can depend on how your home is built. Here’s where to look based on your foundation type.

Homes with a basement

Common locations:

  1. Near the front wall of the basement (closest to the street/sewer main)

  2. Along a basement wall where plumbing lines exit the home

  3. Sometimes hidden behind access panels or under stairwells

  4. On the main “stack” pipe where all the plumbing drains

Homes on a slab foundation

Common locations:

  1. Outside the home, usually along the front or sides

  2. Near exterior walls where the sewer line exits the house

  3. Occasionally in flower beds or hidden under landscaping

Homes with a crawlspace

Common locations:

  1. Inside the crawlspace near where the sewer line exits the home

  2. Just outside the foundation wall, especially near vent openings

Know before you schedule

Before your scheduled sewer scope, do a quick check: Locate the cleanout ahead of time. Ensure it's not blocked, buried, or behind locked gates. If you're unsure, contact your inspector in advance to avoid delays or trip charge.
